TSS Swimming | Free Open Water Session

2 min read

TSS Swimming is happy to introduce a series of Open Water Sessions, beginning Friday 21 August and running on Friday mornings from 5:10am–7:00am.

The sessions are designed to give swimmers aged 11 years and over the opportunity to develop and practise open-water racing skills in a controlled pool environment. The initial sessions will focus on familiarisation with the open-water environment and key skills, before progressively developing into more challenging and representative practice that better reflects the technical, tactical and physical demands of open-water racing.

For our TSS squad swimmers, these sessions form part of our training program. Where the session is applicable to your age and squad, we expect you to be there and involved.

We are also opening the sessions to external surf swimmers and triathletes, who are very welcome to join us free of charge.

Open Water Racing — In the Pool

For these sessions, the pool will look a little different.

Lane ropes will come out, turning buoys will go in, and swimmers will have the opportunity to practise skills that are difficult to reproduce during a traditional squad session.

Sessions will incorporate:

  • Swimming and navigating without lane ropes

  • Efficient turns around buoys

  • Swimming within a group

  • Drafting and positioning

  • Responding to changes in pace

  • Managing congestion and physical contact

  • Making tactical decisions while under fatigue

The objective is not simply to swim continuously. We want athletes to become more comfortable with the technical, tactical and physical demands of open-water racing.

Why We’re Doing It

For TSS swimmers, the sessions provide specific preparation for the upcoming Queensland Open Water competitions, while also developing skills that can transfer back into pool racing.

Open-water swimming introduces athletes to different perceptual and tactical demands. There are no lane ropes to dictate position, swimmers need to respond to the movement of those around them, and efficient drafting, navigation and buoy turns can have a significant influence on performance.

It is another opportunity for our swimmers to develop their race awareness, adaptability and competitiveness.

For our visiting surf swimmers and triathletes, the sessions provide an opportunity to practise and refine these skills in a controlled environment while training alongside our TSS swimmers.
